Planning Wi-Fi for high-density venues

Venue Wi-Fi must be designed around simultaneous users, device mix, applications and room layouts rather than access-point count alone. Test during realistic peak conditions and keep production, media, staff and guest services appropriately separated.

Start with concurrency and application demand

Ticket sales do not equal simultaneous wireless clients, and client count alone does not describe the workload. Estimate active devices by space and event phase, then identify production, payment, media, staff and guest applications that need protected capacity.

  • Busy-hour concurrent devices and device capabilities
  • Upload-heavy media and production workflows
  • Payment, ticketing and operational priorities
  • Guest access policy and expected session duration

Design radio and backhaul together

Channel reuse, transmit power, mounting position and interference determine usable airtime. Switching, PoE budgets, fibre uplinks, internet capacity and resilience must support the radio plan. More access points without coordinated design can make performance worse.

Rehearse before the doors open

Test authentication, roaming, failover and escalation under representative load. Record who can change the network during an event and how production traffic remains separated from public access.

Prepare for a useful design conversation

Bring evidence rather than a preferred product model. A short discovery call is more productive when it covers the sites, users, applications and operational consequences involved. Existing diagrams, circuit details, recent fault patterns and realistic growth expectations help distinguish a capacity problem from a coverage, configuration, resilience or support problem.

  • Sites, opening hours and important business periods
  • Current services, equipment and known constraints
  • Critical applications and the impact of interruption
  • Internal owners, support expectations, budget range and target date

Turn the requirement into a design

Liberty-i will use that context to identify dependencies, explain realistic options and record the assumptions that affect cost or delivery. The result should be a supportable design with clear ownership, acceptance tests and next steps—not simply a shopping list.
